Tank & Pressure Vessel Design
TNI performs mechanical design and prepares fabrication drawings for pressure vessels, storage tanks and process tanks to international codes. PV Elite calculation reports and AutoCAD drawings are complete and ready for review by the owner or a third-party inspector (TPI).
Equipment types and codes
| Equipment | Code | Main calculations |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure vessels | ASME Section VIII Div. 1 | Shell and head thickness for internal pressure (UG-27, UG-32) and external pressure/vacuum (UG-28, UG-33); opening reinforcement (UG-37); flanges; wind, seismic and supports; test pressure (UG-99) |
| Atmospheric steel storage tanks | API 650 | Shell thickness per section 5.6, bottom, roof, wind girders, anchorage; seismic check (Annex E) when required |
| Hygienic tanks | ASME BPE | Drainability, dead-leg control, Ra surface finish, clamp connections, CIP/SIP |
| FRP tanks | ASME RTP-1, BS EN 13121 (as specified) | Laminate design and thickness for hydrostatic and wind loads, nozzles and lifting lugs |
| PVC/PE tanks | DVS 2205 (as specified) | Wall thickness based on operating temperature and creep factors |
Deliverables
- Mechanical calculation report (PV Elite) with design data, materials, allowable stresses and results for each component.
- GA drawing: dimensions, nozzle schedule and orientation, design data, nameplate.
- Detail drawings: weld details, nozzles and flanges, supports (saddles, legs, skirts), lifting lugs, reinforcing pads.
- Bill of materials (BOM) and steel weight summary.
Lessons from the shop floor
- Head forming thinning: ellipsoidal and torispherical heads thin during forming; order plate thicker than the minimum required after forming.
- Joint efficiency: the radiography extent (full, spot or none) directly affects thickness and cost – decide it early.
- Standard plate sizes: set shell course heights to available plate widths to reduce welds and waste.
- Corrosion allowance: define it per service fluid and avoid stacking unnecessary margins.
